King For A Day™ Drag King Courses
From persona development to makeup, costuming to choreography, working the stage and the audience- this course covers everything you need to know about your mansformation and provides guidance from professions working in the industry.
The toughest part of breaking into the scene is getting booked in your first professional show—DONE!
Week four you will show off your King persona on stage in a live show (both our Session 1 and Session 2 shows have SOLD OUT!).
DK101: The introductory-level intensive provides a comprehensive didactic overview across topics along with hands-on practicum, support and guidance by pros, written resources, and an online private group to connect with your fellow classmates (“who wants to hit the Garment District to costume shop?”) and seek advisement from teachers and former graduates (“Here’s a photo of my first try contour make up- tips?”) in between sessions. The full dress rehearsal with feedback from a panel of pros and performing in a professional show are the gems of this course experience. 100% of graduates said they would recommend this course!
DK201: The Advanced Course intensive takes everything you’ve learned in DK101 including the performance you created to the next level. Each advanced course topic is taught experientially by a faculty expert in that area. The advanced level dives deeper into your persona development, increases your choreography capacity (props, movement, stage presence) along with cultivating your show biz skill set (branding, promoting yourself, social media, booking gigs) to be competitive in the marketplace. This course will showcase your advanced mad skills with your performance in another professional show! You must be a graduate of DK101 to enroll in the Advanced Course.
DK101 Course Format
Weeks 1 & 2:
Two 2-hour classes covering persona, what’s underneath, costuming, make up, song choice, lip syncing, and stage.
A week for you to pull your costume together, create your choreography, memorize your song lyrics, practice. KFAD Session 2 (March/April) provides an option to schedule a one-on-one during this week with a choreographer (small additional fee to choreographer). Session 4 (July/August) will have a choreography intensive built into the program reflected in the fee.
Week 4 Wednesday
Wednesday: Show off what you’ve been creating. The first hour you will receive hands on assistance with make up and binding/taping. The second hour is a full dress rehearsal with tech on stage in front of a panel of professionals who will provide you with helpful tips and guidance to tighten up your performance.
Week 4: Saturday it’s show time!
You bring everything you’ve learned and perform in a show with a live audience. Work those tips and you’ll help offset what you paid for this course! Session 1 show SOLD OUT. Session 2 show SOLD OUT.
